DAY 89 FREMANTLE/PERTH AUSTRALIA & DAY 81 CRYSTAL SERENITY

We left Albany, Australia right on time at 4:00 PM yesterday.  Shortly before we left, Captain Giske spoke from the bridge to say that we would be going at 21 knots per hour and he expected we would arrive earlier at our next port of call in Fremantle than our scheduled arrival time of 12:00 Noon.

The sun was shining and the water was shining as we left port.  A tradition of Crystal Cruises when leaving port is to play Louis Armstrong singing "What A Wonderful World" which we heard from outside the ship.  For many of us it is so not only very sentimental, but also so very true about our very wonderful and beautiful world.

Before dinner, we went to the Crystal Cove for a pre-dinner drink. We sat with dear friends John and Linda.  The World Cruise Choir also performed and they sang two songs.  Anyone can join the choir whether you are on board for one segment or the full world cruise.  The choir includes guests, some entertainers, and some members from enrichment.  They do a very nice job.

Afterwards, we were back in the Crystal Dining Room for dinner.

We began our meal with an appetizer of Eggplant.  It was delicious.  We didn't eat the entire dish of eggplant but we could have had it either as an appetizer or an entree and we chose appetizer.  It was delicious.

This is Keith speaking now and I think it is the best eggplant other than one that Anne Marie first made for me when we were dating (do they still use that word today) in College.

Our second course was salad.  Keith had his standing order salad.

Anne Marie had a combination of two salads that Senior Waiter Ayhan prepared for her.  Ayhan looks over the menu and he figures out if one salad would be preferable over the other one and if not he combines those items into one salad that he knows that Anne Marie will enjoy.

For our third course we each had the Fresh Tasmanian Salmon which was accompanied by a Potato Galette and Glazed Yellow Squash.  It was cooked to perfection as it was moist and also came out hot.

For dessert, it was blueberries for Anne Marie and mixed berries for Keith.

The dining room was quieter than usual with other guests dining at one of three other venues or possibly in their rooms.

Last nights show was by vocalist Michel Belle who as always give a great show.

We slept very well as we sailed to Fremantle.

Keith was up first and after his workout at the Fitness Center he went to the Lido Cafe for coffee and to read and write.  Before Breakfast, Anne Marie also walked for an hour inside the ship.  We had breakfast 30 minutes earlier than usual so that Keith could attend an indoor cycling class.

Leanne taught the indoor cycling class and all bikes were in use.  It was a very challenging workout, the kind that Keith enjoys.

While Keith was in the cycling class, Anne Marie took Yoga with Maria and Joe Kita.  Yoga is offered at 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM on each sea day.

The morning did feature one lecture which was given by Howard Fineman.  It covered the Social-Digital Media Takeover.  Keith attended the lecture while Anne Marie attended the Knitting class.

Howard Fineman opened up the session with a question that Keith asked Howard when we spoke to him in port which was what is Chris Matthews like off camera.  He spoke about the first time he met Chris Matthews and they actually quickly became good friends starting when Chris Matthews was on Capital Hill, to working for the press and then moving to television.  Ironically, Roger Ales who at the time was working for MSNBC (who built FOX) came up with the show Hardball for Chris Matthews. He went on to speak about Chris Matthew's family including brothers and father.  He noted that his Father did not have a law degree, but was a law clerk who knew more about law and politics than any well educated person might know.

The Lido Cafe and the Crystal Dining Room opened thirty minutes earlier than usual at 11:30 AM given our arrival time and tours that people have planned for the day.

Surprise......Surprise.....We each had a salad entree.

Today, we visited Fremantle which is our second visit to this area.  The first time we visited this area we spent the day in Fremantle and then the following day we took the train over to Perth.  Given our arrival time, we just planned to visit Fremantle on our own and then we will decide tomorrow whether or not to go back to Fremantle or visit Perth instead.  We arrived to Fremantle at around 11:15 AM and once the ship was cleared we were one of the first off at around 11:45 AM.

Fremantle has welcome seafarers for 150 year.  It underwent a major facelift as it was host for America's Cup Yacht Race of 1986/1987.

The town boasts numerous restaurants, cafes, stores, churches, universities, museums, a sports stadium, and its setting off the Swan River adds to the charm and beauty of this town.

We walked the town for a few hours.  The temperature was quite hot with a high of 95 Fahrenheit and it felt that way when you were in the sun.  However, when in the shade and with an occasional breeze it felt 20 degrees cooler than that.

Anne Marie bought yarn for another knitting project.  This time she is going to knit socks.

We also purchased a some gifts for some members of the crew.

We used this train station a few years ago to take the train over to Perth.

The exterior of many of the buildings has a colonial style and just adds to our enjoyments we walked this town.  There was so much to take in.

The Stadium is home to the Bulldogs.

Esplanade Reserve.

Shipwreck Galleries.

One of the Universities we passed during our walk.

We thought that the trees were absolutely beautiful.

When we arrived back to Serenity Anne Marie got together with a friend Mary Ellen who has knitted socks to be sure that we purchased sufficient yarn and the correct needles.  The good news is we did.

Keith also got together with dear friend Bob later in the afternoon.

This evening we will be back at Prego since it will be the final night that waiter Marija and Head Waiter Mario are on board Serenity as the each will be going on a very well deserved holiday.

Once again, we had a wonderful day on board Crystal Serenity and in the port of Fremantle.
